AC2.3 Flashcards
how does imprisonment meet the aims of punishment
most serious punishment
retribution is met since they are being giving the correct punishment
deterrence is met since this will deter someone from committing similar crime
public are protected since offender is locked away and isolated from society
rehabilitation is met as many offenders can serve the remaining two years in the community on probation allowing them to be reintegrated into society
how does community sentence meet the aims of punishment
rehabilitation , offender may be made to undergo group sessions involved in drug and alcohol abuse aiming to change the behaviour
reparation, giving back to the community
deterrence, people aren’t going to work 300+ hours for free
retribution
how does fines meet the aims of punishment
retribution
deterrence, offender isn’t going to want to re offend and pay money again, possibly get sent to prison
due to the amount unpaid, you could argue fines are not effective in achieving deterrence and retribution
how does discharge meet the aims of punishment
retribution - going through the court process is a big enough punishment for them.
deterrence - if offender does not re offend then no further punishment if they do reoffend they could be imprisoned
