Values
Principles or guidelines for how we should live our life. Tells us what is right or wrong, good or bad.
Norms
Socially accepted standards or specific rules to particular societies
Moral code
Rules, values and principles held by individuals, groups or organisations
Deviance
Behaviour that goes against what society considers ‘normal’
Criminal
An act which goes against the legal laws of society
Actus reus
A guilty act
Mens rea
A guilty mind
Strict liability
Sometimes the wrongful act on its own is enough to convict someone
Social definitions of crime
Law enforcement - police may not pursue certain crimes as they feel it is a waste of time and unpopular
Change in law - laws change to reflect the change in public opinions
Differing opinions - some people may consider one thing a crime while others do not
