Q

Does community services meet their aims of punishment

A

Community service aims to punish and rehabilitate offenders (rehabilitation) and change their behaviour to prevent re offending.

According to Prison reform trust the use of community service has nearly halved since 2006 and now account for just 9% for all sentences, the fact community sentences are more effective by 8.3% at reducing re offending rates compared to imprisonment for similar offence’s which would suggest community services can fulfil its aims of rehabilitation

However BBC reported in 2013 that more than 3/4 of people who are sentenced to prison had at least one previous community service which can counter the argument of community service being effective in meeting its aims of punishment

Q

Does imprisonment meet its aims of punishment

A

Life sentence is the most serious punishment available to our courts, offences such as murder, manslaughter, robbery and rape can carry life sentence punishments , The aim of imprisonment is retribution as the offender has been given the punishment they deserve but also rehabilitate to prevent re offending however the rate of rehabilitation is low as 1000 people were recalled in feb 2015 and 6554 people recalled in march 2017 which suggests rehabilitation does not work for prisons.
