what are external forms of social control
external forms of social control is organisations / physical ways in order to force people to follow the law and conform to society
what is coercion
using force or threats in order to get a desired end or to make someone conform to societal norms
what is control theory
explains why a person would does or doesn’t commit a crime. it is a combination of internal and external
what is fear of punishment
scared of the consequences of an action
what are some criticisms for retribution ?
could be argued that offenders deserver forgiveness
there is a disagreement on which crimes are seen as more serious than others / disagreement on the crime an offender should get
what are some criticisms for rehabilitation ?
right realists would argue that it is not effective as recidivism rates are high despite offenders having access and completing the rehabilitation programmes
Marxists believe that it shifts the blame onto the individual and their failings, when the real cause of the crime is capitalism
what are some criticisms for deterrence
it ignores acts that are irrational - acts that are driven by emotion
people follow the law because they believe it is the right thing to do
what is a criticism for public protection ?
it does not deal with the cause of crime or changes the offenders behaviour
what are some criticism for reparation ?
some see reparation as too soft of a punishment
it cannot work for all types of punishment like murder
