Models of criminal justice
-Herbert Packer (1968), constructed two opposing models to represent the different priorities within the justice system
1. crime control model
2. due process model
-designed to help identify where balance of power lies
- crime control model
-conveyor belt approach – quick and efficient disposal of criminal cases
-zero tolerance approach
-presumption of guilt
-aim = punish criminals and stop them committing further crimes
-focus on rights of victims and society
-police should have enhanced powers
-right realism theory of criminality
- due process model
-presumption of innocence, innocent until proven guilty
