Process of criminal justice
- Criminal law made in parliament
- Police enforce said law and use powers to arrest, detain, interview
- Cps decide if there is enough evidence and advise on appropriate charge
- Suspect appears in court, all cases start in magistrates then go to crown if more serious
- Defendant may be released on bail or remanded in custody
- Not guilty plea leads to trial where verdict is decided, guilty plea results in sentencing
- If convicted defendant is given punishment by magistrate or judge, if punishment is custodial defendant is sent to prison
- HM Prison service oversees welfare of prisoners, hm inspectorate of prisons are an independent body who report on conditions and treatment of prisoners
- Prisoners released on license and supervised by probation service, if conditions of license are breached they return to prison
