Absorption Of Materials Flashcards
What is the function of the lungs
They are gas exchange organs that take in oxygen from the air during breathing in.
During breathing in, what is the oxygen absorbed into?
The bloodstream
What gas passes from the bloodstream into the lungs where it is breathed out of the body?
Carbon dioxide
What is the site of gas exchange in the lungs?
Alveoli
What provides a large surface area for gas exchange?
The lungs contain a large number of alveoli
How are oxygen and carbon dioxide easily absorbed through the alveoli walls?
Their walls are only one cell thick
What gives alveoli a good blood supply?
They are surrounded by many capillaries
By which process is food broken down into smaller soluble nutrients?
Digestion
What is the function of the small intestine?
To absorb nutrients from food
The surface of the small intestine is covered in millions of finger-like projections called what?
Villi
Give 3 factors that increase the efficiency of absorption
- The large number of villi in the small intestine provides a large surface area.
- The lining of the villi is only 1 cells thick.
- Blood capillaries in each villus provides a good blood supply to transport glucose and amino acids
What does the lacteal absorb?
Fatty acids and glycerol
