Ottoman Empire
Islamic state founded by Osman in northwestern Anatolia ca. 1300. After the fall of the Byzantine Empire, the Ottoman Empire was based at Istanbul (formerly Constantinople) from 1453 to 1922. It encompassed lands in the Middle East, North Africa, the Caucasus, and eastern Europe.
Holy Roman Empire
Political affiliation of Germanic and central European city states and principalities to perpetuate Latin Christendom. Did not include England and France. Emperors after the 14th century were elected by seven electors representing the clergy and important participants

Sultan of the Ottoman Empire/against Catholic Habsburgs.
Janissary Corps
Christian slaves who were not selected for the Ottoman bureaucracy served loyally instead in the Turkish army
Poland Lithuania
Large non-unified state joined by two crowns. Comprised of Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, and Bohemia.
Liberia veto
voting in Polish parliament had to be unanimous for changes to be made; thus, little could be done to systematically strengthen the kingdom
Serfdom
feudal system, the use of serfs to work the land in return for protection against barbarian invasions
Robot
in certain regions, peasants were required to work 3-4 days without pay per week for their local lord
Hapsburg empire
a powerful family of German nobles in control of Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, parts of eastern Europe, the Austrian Empire, and the Holy Roman Empire.
Bohemia
Protestant kingdom in the Holy Roman Empire where the people defied their new ruler who tried to close down Protestant churches. It is in modern day Czechoslovakia.
Austria proper
Old hereditary provinces were centralized by Ferdinand III. Ferdinand created a permanent standing army, unprecedented fro the Hapsburg empire

the head of Habsburg elected in 1657 and in return keeping two promises: give no help to his cousins, the rulers of Spain, and the empire would be a state of princes, in which each ruler would be free from imperial interference
Siege of Vienna
Ottoman Empire attemped to invade Vienna but they were stopped by Leopold I
Pragmatic Sanction
Issued by Charles VI of Austria in 1713 to assure his daughter Maria Theresa gained the throne
