What did he state?
Thar human motivation is based on people seeking fulfilment and change through personal growth
What was his 5 hierarchy of needs?
Physiological, safety, love, self esteem and self actualisation
What do some argue about the hierarchy?
That it over simplifies human needs and behaviour
What is the growth need of self actualisation?
The need for personal growth that is present throughout a persons life
What are the growth needs?
Striving for good
Helping others
Seeking truth
Striving to create beauty
Why do some people fear self actualisation?
As it brings duties and responsibilities - called the Jonah complex
What is the Jonah complex for males?
A wish to avoid responsibility or a belief that doesn’t bring social recognition
What is the Jonah complex for females?
Show itself as a reluctance to use intellectual abilities and the fear of being successful in a career
What did Crawford criticise?
Females are wrongly judges against male norms of competition and winning
What did Maslow conduct?
Extensive but not very scientific research on people he categorised as self actualises - defined them as fulfilled and use their abilities to the fullest
What were the 3 pre condition for a person to be a self actualiser?
Absence of restraints, little distractions from deficiency needs and good knowledge of themselves
Characteristics of self actualises?
Perceptive Accepting Spontaneous Problem centred Creative Humourous Detached Private
What are peak experiences?
Feelings of satisfying fulfilment - happen spontaneously and aren’t frequent
How did Maslow carry out his research?
He interviewed people and made his own judgements
What did his research ignore?
Psychological disorders and hence didn’t explore what prevents people from self actualisation
