Was the potential sacrifice of Isaac a fair test?
Your opinion…
No- Abraham left Ur because he disagreed with human sacrifice… it is unfair for him to do something that he knew was morally wrong!
If God is omniscient, why did he need to test Abraham, he should have already known his loyalty!
It was an emotionally traumatising experience for Isaac (and Abraham) and crated trust issues between the two of them
God only intervened when the knife was raised - traumatising and would have been kinder if God intervened at an earlier stage!
What happens during the potential sacrifice of Isaac
- God orders Abraham to go to the Mnt Moriah and sacrifice Isaac as an offering.
- Abraham shows full trust in God, obeying him without hesitation, and sets off to the sacrifice.
- Abraham takes two men with him. After 3 days he stops and tells the men to wait whilst he and Isaac carry on.
- Isaac asks where the animal is for the sacrifice. Abraham replies that God will provide.
- Moments before Abraham sacrifices Isaac, as he lifts the knife, God calls out to him; He tells Abraham to stop, and a ram appears for sacrifice.
- This was God’s test for Abraham. Due to his obedience, God renews His 3 promises (the covenant), and Abraham is told that he will have great descendants
- God renews the covenant after because he showed his extreme loyalty 2 GOD
