Landau-Kleffner syndrome features?
-rare, age-related epileptic encephalopathy
-ages 3-8 years start
-males more than females
-only a few 100 cases
-seizures in 2/3 patients; differnet types of seizures
-seizures mostly during sleep; need sleep EEG for diagnosis
Sleep EEG in Landau-Kleffner syndrome?
-EEG shows unilateral or bilateral activity mostly over posterior temporal regions around Sylvian fissure
-EEG becomes more widespread and intense during sleep (non-REM sleep); then see continuous spike-wave pattern with frequency of 1.5-2.5 spikes/sec
Developmental features of Landau-Kleffner syndrome?
-new onset aphasia: initially receptive aphasia followed by expressive aphasia
- may babble, use neologisms, become mute or have verbal perseveration
-social cognitive deficits
-usually normal development before
Behaviors:
-ADHD, impulsiveness,
-emotional lability
-anxiety, depression
-sleep disorders
-working memory impairment
-hypersensitivity to sound
