Q

What are your learning desires?

A
  • I have a great interest in the human body. Its intricacies and the way it is designed is truly fascinating. I would like to study physiology in greater depth as this would provide me with a greater understanding of these intricacies and what makes them so essential for humans to survive.
  • Something that interests me just as much as the complex the systems of the human body is what can go wrong. Despite humans being resilient beings, there are many numbers of internal problems that can arise and be fatal. These issues can also be very complex and mysterious in nature which attracts me and makes me want to learn more. This ties in with pathology – the study of diseases and diagnosis – which would allow me to explore these areas in greater detail.

Q

How have your academics improved your understanding?

A
  • My academics provided me with understanding of many things in the world, but the most important was what I learned about myself throughout my education
  • I discovered my preference of methods for taking on and studying information, what I was truly capable of achieving and what my limitations were – A big teacher for this was through my exam periods and projects.
  • I was also taught valuable skills such as working effectively as part of a team through group projects, presentation skills and how to be comfortable in public speaking situations
  • I found the topics that I was drawn to and fascinated by, such as biology chemistry. Subjects which are very prevalent in medicine

When have you shown determination, passion, teamwork?

A
  • Conducting fireman carries during casualty evacuation in army training
  • Team work – each man had to take turns carrying the casualty and their equipment. Constantly shouting words of encouragement and looking out for each other. If I seen someone struggling, I would be available for them to step in and take over.
  • Determination – We had been conducting an exercise in the field at this time and we were 3 days into exercise. I was extremely tired and in a lot of pain but kept pushing forward.
  • Passion – We were all being scrutinized by the staff for weaknesses. I showed by commitment to wanting to be there through my work ethic and only thinking about achieving the end goal.

Q

Are you a leader or a follower?

A
  • I am very versatile and can be both when needed
  • I have several qualities that make me a good leader such as good communication and listening skills, emotional intelligence and organisational skills.
  • I embrace opportunities to lead, but will assess my own competence to lead in certain situations to decide whether it is in the teams best interest that I take on the roll.
  • Personal qualities that make me a good follower are my communication and listening skills, and my ability to work well as part of a team.
  • Being both is important as doctors are expected to lead and make decisions regarding patients treatment but also listen to and follow the advice of other people in order to learn.
  • I have had opportunities to learn and follow in the army.

Q

What do you think differentiates you from the rest of the applicants?

A
  • I believe I have a unique combination of experiences, work and extra curriculars that have allowed me to gain the skills and qualities of a good doctor.
  • Joining the army has taught me perseverance through difficult times and has allowed me to improve my physical and mental strength. I was tested under times of extreme stress of mind and body where I had to find it in myself to perform. This includes activities such as long weighted marches, platoon attacks and evacuation drills. This would help me in a career in medicine as there are many times doctors are placed in difficult circumstances and must perform under pressure.
  • Working as a healthcare assistant has allowed me to gain first-hand experience of what it means to care for someone. I kept their best interests in mind, showed them I cared and was there to help, and treated them with respect and kindness. This allowed me to develop compassion, which is very important in a doctor, as the patient is always their first concern.
  • I have taken on hobbies such as instruments from the age of 5. This has taught me great commitment and persistence. Often I had to continuously practise till I could play a piece correctly, failing many times In the process. These skills would aid in being a good doctor as medicine is a difficult life long commitment, and there will be many failures along the way but it is important to keep a positive mindset and never give up.

Q

Tell me about a time you made a mistake and how you dealt with that situation

A
  • Working at dominos and making a pizza with the wrong sauce
  • When working the oven I realised and told the manager, ensuring that id make another pizza promptly
  • It is important to address mistakes like this as you have a duty to uphold standards of the brand you work for and support the needs of the customer
17
Q

What is your worst quality or attribute?

A

1) I can be too critical of myself
• I tend to zero in on negatives in my performance and disregard what I have done well.
• I found this especially true when performing instruments
• It is important to maintain a holistic view and a positive mindset to achieve in medicine as focusing on negatives will lead to too much stress and eventual burnout. There is such a wide range of topics in medicine that it is inevitable there will be things you are good at and bad at.
• I found to combat this, I can make a list of things I did well and things I didn’t to so well. This allows me to appreciate the full performance and not gain tunnel vision.
• This helps me to maintain confidence in my own abilities and accomplishment as well as actively encouraging myself to work on weak points without self-deprecation.

2) I can be shy
• Around new people I can be reserved
• A career in medicine requires you to interact with new people on a daily bases
• After leaving secondary school I did things that scared me and pushed me out of my comfort zone.
• Applying for jobs, doing interviews and joining the military.
• I learned to be confident in myself and who I am as a person and recognise that I have good qualities I should be proud of
• Although I have greatly improved this weakness over the last couple of years, I can still revert back to old habits on occasion.
