Why Aberdeen?
A
- Very early patient contact – gives context to what I learn and will better prepare me for things such as anatomical variation when I undergo my clinical years
- Medical Humanities SSC in year 3. Would allow me to gain a different viewpoint of medicine, particularly in developing countries and warzones. I joined the British Army Reserves in December 2019 and am considering a career as a doctor in the army, so this would provide me with a valuable, eye-opening opportunity to research how medicine is practised in such challenging environments with very limited resources.
- Opportunity for placements in remote areas of Northern Scotland would allow for a very unique and exciting experience in rural medicine. In remote locations of Northern Scotland, GPs tend to be the closest medical professional and often the first responders. This allows for rural GPs to deal with more acute injuries that GPs in locations such as cities would not get to deal with and also a greater variety of injuries.
- The 8 week elective programme in year 5 would allow me the opportunity to take advantage of my learning by giving me the chance to pick the location and discipline of my placement. This gives me a great chance to learn more about areas that I am thinking about specialising in, which would lead to me making a more informed decision. Also gives me the opportunity to learn about the medical practise of many different communities all around the world which can be so different to our own in the UK.
