Abnormal Physiology Flashcards
What are the possible oral stage dysfunctions?
decreased labial strength inability to lateralize material with tongue reduced buccal tension reduced oral sensation reduced tongue strength
What are the possible pharyngeal stage dysfunctions?
Delayed pharyngeal swallow Absent pharyngeal swallow Reduced pharyngeal contraction Reduced hyolaryngeal excursion Reduced soft palate elevation Reduced tongue base retraction General pharyngeal weakness PE segment dysfunction
What are the patient symptoms for decreased labial strength?
unable to keep food in mouth
What would an SLP in a person with decreased labial strength
weak labial muscle tone, reduced ability for patient to make labial sounds
What are the patient symptoms for reduced buccal tension?
may have difficulty masticating, avoid foods requiring chewing, pocketing food between teeth and cheek
What would an SLP see in a person with reduced buccal tension
pocketed food in anterior and lateral oral sulci
What are the patient symptoms for reduced oral sensation?
material goes all over mouth, can’t control food, frequent accidental tongue biting
What would an SLP observe in a person with reduced oral sensation?
material spread around oral cavity, food pocketing in oral cavity
What would you see in the MBS of a person with reduced oral sensation?
loss of bolus control, material spreads around oral cavity, food may spill posteriorly into pharynx before oral transit
What are the patient symptoms for reduced tongue strength?
coughing, choking BEFORE swallow (posterior spillage), food catches in mouth
What are patient symptoms for reduced pharyngeal contraction?
coughing, choking, food sticking in throat.
