Abnormal (Aetiologies of Schizo) Flashcards
Schizophrenia is…
Characterised by a profound disruption of cognitive functions and emotions this affects language and sense of self. P/N symptoms. Distortion and loss of normal function. There is not definitive explanation to the cause but explanations split in to psychological and/psychological.
Twin studies
Have been used to show genetics (Mz/Dz) suggests it genetic if more concordant. Joseph found MZ= 40% and DZ=7.4%.
But could be just similar environments in fact he argues that it just reflects the environment.
Gottesman (Family studies)
Found and concluded parents both= 46% 1=16% and a normal person is 1%
Biochemical factors
The dopamine hypothesis stated that increase leads to schizo evidence by the L-dopa drug.
Problems with this is its difficult too look at biochemical factors as post mortem or spine needle needed.
Torrey found it could be due to 15% bigger brain ventricles. Metanalysis was not constant found overlap with the control.
Freud though
It was due to regression of pre ego and attempt to establish the ego control. Harsh up bringing and uncaring parents.
All freuds criticisms.
Brinley
Found people with schzio twice as many stressful evens but this is correlational the stress could be due to schizo not a cause.
Diathsis stress
doesn’t deny psychological it could be the onset. Must be an interation between them both. “diathesis” genetic and “stress” environment. its difficult to separate both.
Cognitive model BECK
States that its due to all factors takes an holistic approach, genetics create the predisposition. Stress stops the development of the hippocomus which intuen affects cognitive skills. So if stress free then can compensate for this. No one is sure if its range of causes of if theres different types have all have different causes.
