What are the three “biggies” (main bacteria) for bacterial gastroenteritis?
Salmonella (12-36 hours prior to exposure)
C. Difficile
E. Coli (Starts around 5 days, lasts 2 weeks.)
Why might you do a digital vaginal exam on a female patient complaining of constipation?
To see if the rectum is prolapsed into the posterior wall of the vagina.
What are the Rome criteria for constipation?
At least 2 of the following within 3 months:
<3 BM / week
Straining
Lumpy or hard stools
Sensation of incomplete defecation
Manual maneuvering required to defecate.
What are the descriptions of stool on the Bristol stool chart?
Major cause of parasitic gastroenteritis?
Giardia.
What are common presentations for GERD?
What about uncommon?
Heartburn like sensation in epigastric region, regurgitation, dysphagia (common in about 30% of patients),
Uncommon include:
coughing
hoarseness
otitis
chest pain
dental manifestations.
