Define Aaron’s Sign
Referred pain in epigastrium on continuous firm pressure over McBurney’s point.
Indicative of appendicitis.
Define Cullen’s Sign
Superficial bruising near umbilicus.
Indicate bleeding from ectopic pregnancy, trauma or ruptured AAA.
Define Kehr’s Sign
Referred acute pain in tip of shoulder due to blood in abdo when pt lying supine & legs elevated.
Irritation of diaphragm activates phrenic nerve which meets supraclavicular nerves at C3 & C4
Define Murphy’s Sign
Pt breathes out, hand placed at mid clavicular right costal margin. Pt breathes in. Positive if pt winces / catches breath on R not L indicative of cholecystitis due to inflamed gall bladder coming into contact with fingers
Define Grey Turners Sign
Bruising of flanks.
Indicative of retroperitoneal bleeding, specifically acute pancreatitis, trauma, ruptured AAA or ectopic preg
Define Markle Sign
RLQ pain when dropping from toes to heels or walking/running (jarring).
Indicative of localised peritonitis 2* appendicitis.
Define Obturator Sign
RLQ pain when ankle & knee at 90* & knee rotated inwards whilst ankle remains in place.
Indicative of appendicitis when +ve on R not L.
Define Rovsing’s Sign
Referred RLQ pain on palpation & sudden release of LLQ. Indicative of appendicitis.
Define McBurney’s Sign
Deep tenderness at McBurney’s point.
Indicative of appendicitis.
Define McBurney’s Point
2/3 distance from navel to ASIS (anterior superior iliac spine)
Define Balance’s Sign
LUQ dullness on percussion.
Indicative of collection of blood 2* ruptured spleen
Define Blumberg’s Sign
Rebound tenderness.
Indicative of peritonitis and / or appendicitis.
Define Psoa’s Sign
RLQ pain upon lifting R leg against resistance in the supine position.
Indicative of appendicitis.
