Q

It’s surgical section of the vagus nerves that is performed in some people with chronic or recurring ulcers to reduce production of acid. The vagus n. controls acid secretion by the stomach parietal cells.

There are 3 types:

  1. Truncal vagotomy
  2. Selective gastric vagotomy
  3. Selective proximal vagotomy

Q

It’s surgical resection of the vagal trunks. It’s rarely performed because the innervation of other abdominal structures is also sacrificed.

What vagotomy type is it?

Q

In this procedure the stomach is denervated but the vagal branches to the pylorus, liver and biliary ducts, intestines, and celiac plexus are preserved.

A

Q

This procedure attempts to denervate even more specifically the area in which the parietal cells are located, hoping to affect the parietal cells while sparing other gastric function (motility) stimulated by the vagus n.

What vagotomy type is this?

A

Selective proximal vagotomy AKA highly selective vagotomy

Q

This type of ulcer may erode through the stomach wall into the pancreas, resulting in referred pain to the back. In such cases, erosion of the splenic a. results in severe hemorrhage into the peritoneal cavity. Pain impulses from the stomach are carried by GVAs that accompany sympathetic n. It drains into the lesser sac

What ulcer type is it?

A

Post. gastric ulcer
