- The free recall
- Cued recall
- Recognition of sixteen words
Materials: ABCD Word Learning Subtest
Stimulus Book A
Stimulus Book B
Response Record Form

How does The ABCD Word Learning Subtest administration begin?
Administering the ABCD Word Learning Subtest is a multi-step procedure that begins with the examiner assisting the examinee in learning a set of words.
What is the clinician doing ABCD Word Learning Subtest when he is helping the clinician learn words?
He is facilitating controlled encoding.
For step 1 of the controlled encoding procedure, what page needs to be presented from Stimulus Book-A?
Present page 1 from the Word Learning section in Stimulus Book-A
For step 1 of the controlled encoding procedure, objects are presented for the examinee to identify via the Stimulus Book-A. If the examinee does not point to the appropriate item, what does the examiner do?
The examiner says, “This is the (name of the item).”
For step 2 of the controlled encoding procedure, what does the examiner do?
The examiner removes the page with the four items from the examinee’s sight, and asks them the following questions:
- Which was the precious stone?
- Which was the part of the human body?
- Which was the musical instrument?
- Which was the fish?
What should the examiner do if the examinee misses one or more of the items in step 2 of controlled encoding?
- The missed items have to be presented again.
- The examiner says, “Let’s look at this page again. Show me the (give category cue for missed item).
- Remove page and say, “Which was the (give category cue for the missed item [i.e.: precious stone]?+”
If the examinee still cannot recall items in a second trial during step 2 of controlled encoding, what should occur?
- Page 1 should be presented again.
- For each missed item, say the category cue, and then, name the item.
- Then, remove the page from view, and say, “Which one was the [insert category cue here].”
What happens during step 3 of the controlled encoding procedures?
- The procedures in steps 1 and 2 of controlled encoding should be repeated for the remaining three pages (sets of four words).
- Category cues (listed in the Response Record Form) should be used.
How does a clinician score the controlled encoding exercise on the Response Record Form?
Place a check by the words that the examinee identifies during Steps 1 and 2.
If a correct response is not obtained for an item after 3 presentations of the stimulus page, make a slash through the item number.
What is the criteria for discontinuing the Word Learning Subtest?
- Permit 3 learning trials per stimulus page.
- If, after three trials per page, the examinee is unable to identify any of the items to be learned, discontinue the test.
What are the components of the Word Learning Subtest?
- Controlled Encoding
- Distraction
- Free Recall
- Cued Recall
- Recognition of Learned Words
How long does the clinician distract the examinee during the distraction portion of the Word Learning Subtest?
20 seconds
What does the clinician ask the examinee to do in order to distract the examinee for 20 seconds during the distraction portion of the Word Learning Subtest?
The clinician asks the examinee to count to 20.
After 20 seconds are up for the distraction portion of the Word Learning Subtest, what should the clinician do?
The clinician should present the fourth stimulus page and ask the examinee to recall the words on that page.
During the free recall portion of the Word Learning Subtest, what does the clinician ask the client to do?
The clinician asks the client to name as many words as possible from the four pages the examinee has seen.
How many minutes should the clinician allow the examinee to respond?
A full 2 minutes
How is the free recall portion of the Word Learning Subtest scored?
In the Free Recall Column on the Response Record Form, one point is awarded for each correctly recalled word.
Examinees are typically unable to recall all of the stimulus words in the free recall situation. If the are provided with ________ with cues in the form of names of the categories to which the unrecalled stimulus words belong, additional words may be recalled.
Cues
What directions are given to the examinee in the cued recall portion of the Word Learning Subtest?
“There are a few words that you did not name. These clues may help you think of them. Which was the (give the category cue for the missed item)?”
Under what circumstances should cues be provided in the cued recall section?
Cues should only be provided for items missed in the free recall section.
How are points awarded in the Cued Recall section?
One point is awarded for each word recalled in the cued recall condition.
Define Total Recall Score.
The sum of the free and cued recall scores.
To determine the number of stimulus words the examinee recognizes, what should an examiner say?
“Now, I am going to show you some words. Tell me if the word appeared on the pages I showed you earlier. Just answer yes or no. Here is the first word [Present card #1 from the “Recognition” segment in Stimulus Book-B]. Was this one of the words I showed you earlier?”
How long should the examiner continue the Recognition of Learned Words portion of the Word Learning Subtest?
It should be continued until all the cards have been presented.
How are points awarded for the Recognition of Learned Words portion of the Word Learning Subtest?
One point is awarded for each correct response.
How are responses recorded on the Response Record Form for Recognition of Learned Words?
The examinee’s response should be circled for each word on the Response Record Form.
