To demonstrate knowledge of a concept by providing a correct definition.

- Response Record Form
- Tape Recorder
What does the clinician ask the examinee to do in the ABCD Concept Definition Subtest?
The clinician shows the examinee some words, and asks the examinee to define them.
What is the trial item for the ABCD Concept Definition Subtest?
Defining a hammer.
Do you provide feedback to the examinee after he/she provides a definition?
Yes.
- If the examinee provides a definition worth three points, say so and explain why.
- If the examinee provides a definition worth two points or one point, explain how it could be improved.
What does a clinician do if an examinee fails to respond to the trial item prompt?
- The clinician must repeat the instructions.
- After the instructions are repeated, and 15 seconds have elapsed, provide the definition stated in the manual for hammer, and proceed with the first test item.
How are stimulus words handled with regard to presentation in the ABCD Concept Definition Subtest?
Say each stimulus word as you show the card to the examinee.
Criteria for Discontinuing: Concept Definition Subtest
None: Administer all items.
How should responses be recorded for the ABCD Concept Definition Subtest?
Write down the stated definitions as completely as possible on the Response Record Form.
How should tape recording be utilized in the Concept Definition Subtest?
Use tape recording to verify and complete the transcription of responses to the Response Record Form.
How should points be awarded for the Concept Definition Subtest?
Award 3, 2, 1, or 0 points for each definition according to the criteria listed in the manual.
What is the criteria for crediting a response with 3 points for the Concept Definition Subtest?
- The definition must have at least 3 ideas.
- One idea must be a use or function of the item.
- Another idea must be an attribute of the item.
- Third idea can be either a function or attribute.
How does scoring work if the examinee provides more than three ideas within a response?
The response is still awarded only three points.
What is the criteria for crediting a response with 2 points for the Concept Definition Subtest?
Awarded to a definition that contains two uses or functions, attributes, or a use/function and an attribute.
What is the criteria for crediting a response with 1 point for the Concept Definition Subtest?
Awarded to a definition containing one idea.
What is the criteria for a response regarding that it must “make sense?”
- The information presented in the definition must make sense.
- Be careful about awarding credit to ideas that almost make sense.
- If two ideas are expressed in two phrases in the same utterance and only one makes sense, credit should be given for the phrase that is meaningful.
What is the criteria for a response regarding “implicate?”
- Avoid giving credit for ideas that are implied by other expressions.
EX: Stating asparagus is both a food and edible - stating it is a food implies that it is edible. - Credit should not be given to any response where one part of the response can be implied to mean the other part:
EX: “A broom is used for anyone to sweep the porch and keep it clean.” - Sweeping implies keeping the porch clean.
What is the criteria for a response regarding repetition of a term in several definitions?
- Do not award a point for the idea of “thing” or words such as “instrument” or “device” if they are used repeatedly and indiscriminately.
