what is AAC?
An area of clinical practice that addresses the needs of individuals with complex communication needs who have impairments in speech/ language production
what is congenital disabilities that may benifit from AAC include
cerebral palsy
developmental apraxia of speech
developmental disability
genetic disorders
intellectual disability
what is acquired disabilities that may benefit from AAC
Cerebravascular accidents (stroke)
traumatic or acquired brain injures
neurodegenenerative diseases such as als, progressive supranuclear palsy
primary progressive aphasia and apraxia
what is unaided communication systems
non spokeb means of natural communication does not require an external tool
what is aided communication system
requires some form of external too either electronic or non electronic

eye gaze boards, writing, laser light pointers on an alphabet or communication board
good for non movement paitent

simplistic, voice output devices
typically able to push buttons

what are the treatment goals
improve functional communication

to freely express ideas thoughts and feelings to a variety of listeners across contexts. achieve personal education, vocational and social goals

what is transparent
symbols are readily guessable in the absence of the referent such as a photograph or written word
what is opaque
symbols are not readily guessable even when the meaning of the symbol is known such as an individualized jesters
what is translucent
lie between transparent and opaque symbols. the meaning of the referent may not be obvioud when additional information is provided
