A330 Landing Gear Flashcards
What system controls the ldg gear and doors?
Landing Gear Control Interface Unit (LGCIU)
How are the landing gears controlled and operated?
Electrically controlled
Hydraulically operated
To which landing gears is anti-skid fitted?
To the main ldg gear only.
What does the shortening mechanism do?
It retracts the shock absorber of the main ldg gear into the leg to allow the gear to be retracted into the bay.
What does the pitch trimmer do?
- It ensures the bogie is in the correct position for retraction.
- It also damps the movement of the bogie.
Which direction does the nose ldg gear retract?
Forward
Which way does the pitch trimmer set the bogie?
Front wheel up
When does the LGCIU cycle?
- At the end of a ldg gear retraction cycle.
- in the event of one LGCIU failure
Which hydraulic systems operates the ldg gears and doors?
Green
In which position does the ldg gear selector have to be in, when doing a gravity extension procedure on the A330? Why?
- Down
- To open the safety valve upstream of the gravity extension valve and allow green hydraulic fluid to pass.
Wich LGCIU controls the ldg gear down and locked indicators?
LGCIU 1
In case of ldg gear gvty extension, what are some impacts to the operation?
- Ldg gear doors remain down, increased fuel consumption
- Nose wheel steering is lost
If you select ldg gear lever down and after a few seconds you don’t get the green down and locked indication, what would you do?
- Check the wheel SD page (information from LGCIU 1&2)
- Recycle ldg gear lever
- Ldg gear gvty extension
If you only see one green light after gear extension, what does this mean?
- All ldg gear down and locked
- Double check SD page
- Possible broken indicator lights
If the ldg gear is selected up, how are the wheels stopped from spinning?
- MLG by normal brake system
- NLG by brake band in bay
When does the red down arrow next to the ldg gear lever illuminate?
- 750ft on approach
- ldg gear not down and locked
After ldg gear gvty extension, can the gear be retracted again?
- If green hydraulic pressure is available and
- If the ldg gear gvty selector has been RESET and set to OFF
There are two gvty extension selectors. Which one needs to be selected to DOWN for the gear to extend?
Both
When is the wheel SD page displayed?
- On ground after, engine running, before takeoff, disappears at TO power
- On approach, ldg gear selection
- Below 800ft with gear still up
- Disappears at engine shut down
When does the L/G CTL indication appear on the SD?
- After a 30sec time delay if
- the position of any ldg gear disagrees with the lever position. (ECAM triggered)
Which hydraulic system does the NWS use on the A330?
And on the A350?
- Green
- Yellow
What system controls the NWS?
What inputs does it receive?
- Brake and Steering Control Unit (BSCU)
- Steering Tiller, Rudder Pedals, Autopilot
How many degrees can the NWS be turned with rudder pedals?
Maximum of 6 degrees, reducing with increased taxi speed.
How many degrees can the NWS be turned with the steering tiller?
Maximum of 72 degrees reducing with increased taxi speed.
Up to what speed do the rudder pedals have authority on the NWS on takeoff?
And on ldg?
- 150kts takeoff
- 100kts ldg
Up to what speed does the steering handwheel provide inputs to the NWS?
Below 100kts
When does the NWS TOWING FAULT light illuminate?
NWS steering angle has exceeded 93 degrees.
The N/WS DISC is shown in green on the SD, what does this mean?
The NWS lever is in the towing position.
The N/WS DISC is shown in amber on the SD, what does this mean?
- The NWS lever is in the towing position
- One engine has started
Which hydraulic system does the normal braking system use?
Green
Which hydraulic system does the alternate baking system use?
Blue
What modes of braking are there?
- Normal braking
- Alternate braking
- Auto-braking
- Anti-skid
When do the BSCU change over?
- On ldg gear lever down selection
- When one BSCU fails
What protection is in place for tire overheat?
Fusible plugs
Brake cooling,if installed
What does the anti-skid system do?
- Prevents tires from skidding by
- releasing brakes when tires slow down below a certain speed
- Allows more maximum braking
- Prevents Aquaplanning
When does auto-brake activate?
- When the spoilers are deployed (above 72kts) in LO and MED modes
- When the spoilers are deployed (72kts) and wheel speed above 40kts for MAX mode
If you have to reject a takeoff at low speeds, will the auto-brake work?
- If rejected below 72kts, spoilers don’t deploy
- Auto-brake doesn’t activate
How is the auto-brake disarmed?
- Pressing the pb
- losing one or more arming conditions
- pressing brake pedals
- after takeoff or touch and go
What braking modes are there?
- Normal braking
- Alternate braking with anti-skid
- Alternate braking without anti-skid
- Park brake
Which systems are operative in normal braking?
- Anti-skid
- Auto-brake
Which systems are operative in alternate braking with anti-skid?
- Anti-skid
When does alternate braking occur?
- Green system insufficient pressure
- Blue system takes over
Which systems are operative in alternate braking without anti-skid?
- No auto-brake
- No anti-skid
When does alternate braking without anti-skid occur?
How are the brakes supplied?
- B and G system low pressure
- Accumulator only
In alternate braking without anti-skid what pressure limit is set on the brakes and how many applications does the accumulator give?
- 1000 PSI
- 7 full brake applications
Which systems is the park brake supplied by?
- Blue hydraulic system
- Accumulator
For how long does the accumulator maintain pressure on the park brake?
12 hrs
If the engines are off and the blue hydraulic system is not powered, how can the park brake be set?
By pressing the brake pedals and setting the park brake lever.
Which auto-brake mode is usually selected for takeoff?
MAX
Which auto-brake mode is usually selected for ldg?
LO or MED
When does the green DECEL light illuminate?
When at least 80%of the selected deceleration rate is achieved?
You touch down, select reversers and start decelerating. You don’t see the green DECEL light. Why?
- The 80% deceleration rate hasn’t been achieved
- Can take up to 8(5) seconds to appear for LO(MED) brake selectiono
- May not be achieved on slippery rwys
If the park brake lever is left at half position between ON and OFF, what does this mean?
Park brake is not on (Only on in actual ON position)
What does the symbol “III” indicate on the wheel SD page?
Anti-skid
What does the green arc on top of one of the wheels on the wheels SD page mean?
What if it’s amber?
- It indicates the hottest brake if one brake exceeds 100 degrees.
