A330 Flight Controls Flashcards
Which spoilers are also used for roll control?
- Spoilers 2 to 6
What is MLA and what does it do?
When is it active?
- Manoeuvre Load Alleviation
- Redistributes loads over the wing to avoid wing bending
- Above 250kts, normal and alternate law, flaps zero
What happens when the maximum deflection of one of the spoilers has occurred during roll control and speedbrake use?
- The opposite side spoiler will retract until the roll control demand has been achieved
What does BYDU stand for and what does it do?
- Backup Yaw Damper Unit
- Activated when total loss of electrical power or
- total loss of all computers
- It provides yaw damping function
When does the high AoA protection activate?
What does it do?
- When the AoA becomes greater than AlphaPROT
- It maintains AlphaPROT (no backstick) or
- It maintains AlphaMAX (full backstick)
- Stops trimming nose up
What happens when the AlphaFLOOR protection kicks in?
- The auto-thrust sets go around thrust
- Aircraft may start a gentle climb
By how much does the FLRS retract the flaps?
- Just one stage (Flap FULL to 3, 3 to 2, 2 to 1)
If one spoiler on the wing fails on one side, what happens?
- The other symmetric spoiler is inhibited
- Except spoiler 4 and 6
On landing, when do the spoilers deflect if they have been armed? And if they have not been armed?
- As soon as main wheels touch down with thrust levers at idle
- As soon as reverse is selected on one engine with main wheels touched down and the other reverser selected to idle
How do you know when the aircraft is in mechanical backup law?
- Amber ‘x’ appears instead of green protection symbols (pitch and AoB)
- No AlphaPROT indication (amber/black stripes)
- ‘MAN PITCH TRIM ONLY’ (red) message appears on PFD
When does the high speed protection deactivate?
When the aircraft slow to below Vmo/Mmo
Which two control surfaces have a mechanical link?
- Trimmable Horizontal Stabilizer (THS)
- Rudder (on older models)
What happens to the outboard ailerons at high speed?
Why?
- above 190kts the outboard ailerons are controlled to the zero deflection position.
- To prevent aileron reversal, excessive wing forces, or damage
At what speed will the spoilers deflect on an RTO?
- Above 72kts groundspeed
What happens if one hydraulic system or SFCC is inop?
- Flaps/slats operate at half speed
Instead of a mechanical link to the rudder as on some older models of the A330, what do the newer models provide?
- Backup Control Module
What are the protection limits of the pitch attitude protection?
- 30 degrees nose up
- 15 degrees nose down
What happens if hydraulic pressure is lost to one of the spoilers?
It remains in the current position unless blown back by aerodynamic forces
How does one recover from the AlphaFLOOR protection?
- Decrease the AoA by easing forward on the side stick until past AlphaPROT
- Disconnect A/THR by disconnect pb
- Resume normal flight
When does “SPEED SPEED SPEED” alert occur?
- Immediately before AlphaFLOOR
- Between 100’ and 2000’
- Config 2,3, Full
- Normal Law only
When flying at AlphaMAX and the sidestick is released, what happens?
The aircraft returns and maintains AlphaPROT
When does AlphaFLOOR activate?
Between AlphaPROT and AlphaMAX
