How serious you think it is
What is perceived susceptibility?
The likelihood to get an illness or disease
What is cost-benefit analysis?
Weighing up pros and cons of changing a behaviour
What is demographic variables?
Characteristics such as age, gender and race
What are cues to action?
Information that is presented to an individual that may prompt them to ‘take action’
What is internal locus of control?
Success in terms of your own effot
What is external locus of control?
Believing that things that happen to them are out of their control
What are attributions?
Explaining other people’s and your own behaviour
What are personal attitudes
An individuals favourable and unfavourable beliefs about their behaviour e.g. ‘I overeat because I enjoy food’
What are subjective norms?
Individuals beliefs about whether the people who matter most to them approve or disapprove of their behaviour
What is perceived behaviour control?
How much control we believe we have over behaviour
What is self-efficacy?
The belief we have in our ability to carry out an action or task
What is having a high self-efficacy?
Believing you will be successful and therefore more motivated to tackle difficult tasks
What is having a low self-efficacy?
Believing you will fail and therefore avoid challenges
What is mastery experiences?
Mastering something
What is vicarious reinforcement in terms of self-efficacy?
Seeing some you identify with doing well so you want to do well (high) or seeing them do bad (low)
What is social persuasion in terms of self-efficacy?
Encouragement from people (high) or disencouragement (low)
What is emotional states in terms of self-efficacy?
Being sad can cause low self-efficacy and being happy can cause high self-efficacy
what are the stages of the trans theoretical model?
per-contemplation, contemplation, prep, action and maintenance
what stage are people in pre-contemplation in, in terms of the trans theoretical model?
they aren’t thinking about changing their behaviour and this could be because of denial or demotivation
what stage are people in contemplation in, in terms of the trans theoretical model?
thinking about making a change to their behaviour in the next 6 months
what stage are people in preparation in, in terms of the trans theoretical model?
they decide to change their behaviour sometime in the next month but haven’t decided how or when
what stage are people in action in, in terms of the trans theoretical model?
they’ve done something to change their behaviour in the last 6 months
what stage are people in maintenance in, in terms of the trans theoretical model?
they have maintained some change of behaviour for more than 6 months
