A108 Airspace Flashcards
Name the controlled Airspace classes
Class A,B,C,D, E
Describe and list requirements of Class A Airspace
- 18,000 ft MSL above all
- IFR flights only and Aircraft must be certified for IFR
- Requires Clearance from ATC and a flight plan
- -ATC will provide separation between aircraft
- Instrument Rating required ; Student pilots not allowed
- No Chart depictions
- Airspeed
Describe and list requirements of Class B Airspace(Big busy airspace)
- IFR and VFR flights
- Clearance is required to enter
- Min Pilot Qual: Private Pilot and Restricted Student
- Depicted on chart with solid blue lines
- **Equipment Required: Two Way Radio and Transponder w/ Mode C
- **Airspeed
- -
Describe and list requirements of Class C Airspace (Crowded city airports)
- IFR and VFR flights
- Clearance: two way dialogue (you need to be acknowledged to enter)
- No specific pilot requirements
- Depicted with solid magenta lines
- SFC to 4000’ AGL for interior control, 1200-4000 AGL for wider control
- 2 way comms req + operating transponder with Mode C (same as bravo)
- Airspeed
- -<= 250 KIAS
- -<= 200 KIAS below 2500’ AGL within 4nm of primary airport
- *-VFR Visibility is 3SM
- *–Cloud Clearance is 500 below, 1000 above and 2000 horizontal
Describe and list requirements of Class D Airspace (Dwarf Cities)
- IFR and VFR flights
- 2 way dialogue required
- No pilot quals required
- Depicted with dashed blue lines
- 2 way comms required and ATC must acknowledge prior to entry
- Airspeed
- -<= 250 KIAS
- -<= 200 KIAS below 2500’ AGL within 4nm of primary airport
- *-VFR Visibility is 3SM
- *–Clouds 500 below, 1000 above, 2000 horizontal(same as Charlie)
Describe and list requirements of Class E Airspace (Anywhere that isn’t A-G)
- All allowed and no clearance required or specific equipment required
- Can be dashed magenta, fading blue or magenta, castellated blue line
- Fills all the gaps between all the other areas
- Class E airspace will have an operating tower somewhere that is reachable
- Airspeed
- -<= 250 KIAS below 10,000’ MSL
- -< Mach 1 above 10,000’ MSL
Class G air Space(uncontrolled)
- Found beneath Class E airspace and fills the gaps
- Depicted as faded Magenta Line
- Usually no ATC services available ; implied by class E depictions
- No special requirements to enter
- Airspeed
- -<= 250 KIAS below 10,000’ MSL
- -< mach 1 above 10,000 MSL
Identify special use airspace
Prohibited areas, restricted areas, military operating areas, alert area
prohibited area
- Established for security or other reasons for national welfare. Aircraft aren’t allowed to enter.
- Blue circle with lines pointing inward
restricted area
-denote existence of unusual/invisible hazards
military operating areas(AMOA)
- To separate military training from IFR activity
- You aren’t not allowed to go in there but if you do, be aware of training aircraft
Alert Area
-Areas of high volumes of pilot training or unusual type of aerial activity
Identify selected other airspace areas
Military training route, temporary flight restrictions, national security area
military training route
- IR or VR ; 4 digits follow if below 1500 AGL and 3 digits if above 1500 AGL
- Example: IR409
- VR routes are normally flown below 1500 AGL (quiz question)
- Allows low speed high altitude training
Temporary flight restrictions
Have a bunch of reasons - closes airspace for a bit
