A1 Unit 2 Flashcards
Geographical Awareness
What are the 5 oceans?
Atlantic, Pacific, Southern, Indian and Arctic
What is a region?
A part of a country (or the world) that has definable characteristics but not always fixed boundaries.
What is a sea?
Smaller than oceans and are usually located where land and ocean meet.
What is an Ocean?
A large body of water between continents.
What does coastal mean?
Used to refer to things that are in sea or on the land near a coast.
What does inland mean?
Situated in the interior of a country.
What is an island?
Piece of land that isn’t connected to a continent and is surrounded by water.
What is a river?
A moving body of water that flows from its source, across land, and then into another body of water.
What is a lake?
Body of water that is surrounded by land.
What is an estuary?
Area where freshwater river/stream meets the ocean.
What is a mountain range?
Group/chain of mountains that are close together.
What is altitude?
The height above sea level.
Why is it harder to breathe in areas that have high altitude?
High altitude= low air pressure= less oxygen
What is the difference between a forest and rainforest?
The amount of rainfall.
Why do seasons take place?
The Earths axis is an imaginary line going through the centre of the earth between the North and South poles. This axis is slightly tilled, causing us to have seasons.
What hemispheres are there?
Northern and Southern divided by the equator and Western and Eastern divided by an imaginary line passing through the poles.
What is the equator?
Imaginary line that runs around the middle of the earth (halfway between North and South poles).
Why is latitude and longitude used?
To accurately locate places on the earths surface.
What direction is Longitude?
Top to bottom direction. They meet at a point at the North and South poles and are called meridians.
What direction is Latitude?
East to West direction (parallel).
What are the poles?
If you stick a pencil directly through the Earth at the point of rotation, these two points are the north and south poles.
