A02 social influences on gender role Flashcards
What are the sections
Social con go the theory
Sources of social influence
What are the 2 sections for social cognitive theory
Evidence to support modelling
Direct tuition may be more effective than modelling
Talk about evidence for modelling
The bobo doll study
Showed effects of adult model on children’s aggressive behaviour. Effects also shown for gender e.g. Perry study
But only modelled same sex behaviour of behaviour was not inconsistent
So effects of modelling are limited by existing stereotypes
Why direct tuition is more important evidence
Martin
Showed that boys when told a toy is a girls even if they saw another boy playing it they didn’t model him cz it’s a girls toys u gets direct tuition is more important than modelling
They didn’t model same sex behaviour when told it was a girls toy
What are the 4 sections for sources of social influence
Gender differences
Peer influences
Demonstrating media influence
Media effects may be insignificant
Who tested ed gender differences
Langlois and down
What did langlois and downs do and find
Mum’s and dads behave differently to gender inconsistency
Dad’s openly dissapointed more
Mum’s reinforced gender appropriate play but didn’t punish innapropriate
Similar in peers
Boys reacted negatively to innapropriate. Girls were more tolerant
This is cz female behavioir has lower value so gender innapropriate behaviour isn’t too bad compared to males
Talk about research on peer influences
Lamb
I served preschool kids playing and found that when male type behaviour was reinforced in girls the behaviour continued for a shorter time than when a male type behaviour was reinforced in boys
Suggests that peer reinforcement mainly acts as a reminder
Talk about demonstrating media influence
Difficult to demonstrate influence cz almost all kids watch TV so control griup doesn’t exist
But Williams studied in a culture with no tv and found that tv does have a significant effect on gender roles
Talk about media effects may be insignificant
Charlton
No difference in aggressive behaviour
Media’s effects is simply to reinforce status quo not change attitudes to gender roles
