a01 cultural influences on gender role Flashcards
How does study of cultural influences help us
If biology is am in fact ore I determing gender role then we’d expect to find similarities in the division of labour
If it’s socialisation then we’d expect variation between culture in the different roles taken on by men and women
What are the 2 sections for cultural similarities and variations
Cultural similarities: division of labour
Cultural variatoons:
Magnitude of sex differences
Talk about division of labour
All societies have some gender division of labour and behaviour
Some gender roles are shared but in no society did they find food preparation to be mainly man’s role
This is shown by mead
Williams and best
Buss
Talk about meads study showing gender division of labour

Suggesting universal gender stereotypes
But task was forced choice
Task related to stereotypes and not actual behaviours

Talk about buss study
Found gender diff in terms of mate preference universal diff too
Who gave evidence for cultural variations in terms of magnitude of sex differences
Berry et al
What did berry et al do and find
Looked at male Superiority on spatial perceptual tasks in 17 societies
Found this Superiority only fount in tightly knit sedentary societies but absent in looser nomadic societies
Conclusions from berry et al study
Sex differences on spatial perceptual tasks interact with ecological and cultural factors
Also tested conformity. Found it to be highest in tight sedentary societies with a correlations between this sex difference and and an ecocultural index of plus .78
Highest in women
