A River System And River Course Flashcards
Source
Start of a river
Mouth
Where a river joins a sea
Tributary
Small stream that joins a large river
Meander
A sweeping bend in a river
Confluence

Water shed
It’s the boundary between one drainage basin and another
What are the 3 parts of a river course
Upper. Middle and lower
Characteristics of the upper course
The river is :
Shallow
Narrow
Flows through a v shaped valley
Channel is narrow
Load size is at its largest
Waterfalls are found here
Its main features are produced by erosion
Characteristics of a middle course
Meanders are here
River is wider
Channel’s wider
Characteristics of a lower course
Flat land at either side of the river
Channel is its widest here
What are meanders
Bends in a river
How are meanders formed?
Through a combo of erosion and deposition
What happens in the inside of the bend
Deposition. The river is shallower and creates a river beach/ slip off slope
What happens in the outside of a bend
Erosion. The river is deeper and creates a river cliff. That’s lateral erosion (sideways)
