A&P Lec Ch2 Flashcards
Energy
The capacity to do work or put matter into motion
Matter
Anything that occupies space and has mass. With some exceptions it can be seen, smelled, and felt.
In the state of solids, liquids, gases
Kinetic energy
Energy in action.
Potential energy
Store/inactive energy
Chemical energy
Form stored in the bonds of chemical substances
Electrical energy
Results from the movement of charged particles. Electrical currents are generated when charged particles, called ions, move along or across cell membranes.
Used in the nervous system
ATP
Adenosine triphosphate: Chemical that temporarily bonds food energy
Mechanical energy
Energy that is directly involved in moving matter
Example: when you ride a bike, your legs provide mechanical energy to move the peddles
Radiant energy/electromagnetic energy
Energy that travels in waves
These waves vary in length and are collectively called the electromagnetic spectrum
Elements
Unique substances that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by ordinary methods
For main elements composing the human body
Carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen
Compose 96% of our body mass
Atoms
The particles or building blocks that make up elements
Greek word for indivisible
However we now know that atoms are clusters of even smaller particles called protons, neutrons, and electrons.
Atomic symbol
One or two letter abbreviations for each element
Nucleus of Atom
Contains protons and neutrons tightly bound together
Protons/Neutrons
Protons have a positive electrical charge … neutrons are neutral so the nucleus is positively charged overall.
