A&P Flashcards
Functions of the skin (SHAPES?)
Sensation Heat regulation Absorption Protection Excretion Secretion
Functions of the skin SENSATION
Nerve ending in the skin allow us to experience sensations such as; Touch Pain Heat Cold Pressure
Functions of the skin HEAT REG
We swear when we need to cool down, perspiration evaporates and skin cools
Shivering caused hair to stand on end, closed pores and prevents sweat loss, layer of air becomes trapped and warms body
Blood vessels rise when body is hot and cold tract when body is cold to keep heat inside
Functions of the skin ABSORPTION
UV light is absorbed though skin, this helps form Vit D - needed for strong, healthy bones
Skin has limited absorption however certain creams are absorbed though the skin
Functions of the skin PROTECTION
Protective covering, covers whole body - aided by acid mantle
Provides protection from external factors, acts as cushioning
Outer dead cells help prevent water loss
Skin produces melanin to protect skin against harmful sun rays
Functions of the skin EXCRETION
Waste products and toxins are eliminated from the body in sweat, through sweat glands
Functions of the skin SECRETION
Sebum is secreted from the sebaceous glands
Sebum keeps skin soft, lubricated and helps keep it waterproof
Sweat combines w sebum to form acid mantle - protective barrier & maintains correct p.H level of the skin (5.5)
Epidermis
Outer most layer, made up of 5 separate layers & contains no blood vessels + very few nerves
Pierced by hair follicles and ducts for sweat and sebum
Dermis
Dense tissue that is deeper and thicker than the epidermis
Contains fibres, blood vessels, nerves, hair follicular and glands
Subcutaneous Layer
Adipose tissue, helps insulate the body (either gaining or loosing heat)
Also severe as padding around organs and helps protect them
Gives rounded appearance of the body
