preterite tense
Actions completed at a point in the past that are complete.
- Events that already happened
- Things beginning and ending
- Things that happened on a specific date.
The preterite tense could be used for:
“I graduated from college.”
“I built that.”
It is not used for actions that are habitual or continuous or actions that began in the past and have not yet completed.
It would not be used for:
“I was studying.”
“I started studying.”

ir - Yo fui a la iglesia

Note that ir and ser have identical conjugations
to give (preterate) - He gave His Son for us.
dar - “El dio su Hijo por nosotros.”

- Events that already happened
“Roberto nació en El Salvador.” - Things beginning and ending
“Empezó a llover.” - Things that happened on a specific date.
“Leiste la biblia el mes pasado”
imperfect tense
Used for actions that are continual or things that someone or something was doing in the past.
- Something that happened continually in the past.
We used to go to church every week - “Ibamos a la iglesia cada semana.” - Something that was in progress in the past.
Maira was cooking when I came in the kitchen. - “Maira cocinaba cuando entré la cocina” - Talking about a specific time or date in the past.
“It was four o’clock in the afternoon.” - “Eran las cuatro de la tarde.” - Age in the past
I was fifteen years old. - “Tenia quince años” - What something was like.
The trip was incredible - “El viaje era incrible” - How someone was feeling
I was miserable in my sin - “Yo era miserable en mi pecado”
imperfect tense - ar verbs (to speak)
