Motivation
The desire and energy to be continually interested and committed to a job, role or subject, or to make an effort to attain a particular goal.
Employee engagement
Feeling positively about doing a good job, thinking hard about the job and how to do it better, and actively taking opportunities to discuss work-related improvements with others at work.
Motivation theory
The study of factors that influence the behaviour of people in the workplace.
Piece-rate system (or
piecework)
Payment based on the number of items each worker produces.
Commission
A sum of money paid to an employee upon completion of a task, usually selling a certain amount of goods or services; commission may be paid as a percentage of sales made or as a flat rate based on sales volume.
Salary schemes
A basic rate payment system where employees are paid an annual salary.
Performance-related pay
(PRP)
Systems that reward individual employees based on an assessment of their individual performance and usually measured against pre-agreed objectives; this generally takes the form of a bonus or increase in salary awarded for above average performance.
Job enlargement
Job enlargement means increasing the scope of a job, either by job rotation or job enrichment.
Job enrichment
Job enrichment is a means of giving employees greater responsibility and offering them challenges that allow them to utilise their skills fully.
Job rotation
Job rotation is a systematic program of switching jobs to provide greater variety. Essentially, it gives workers more varied work but at a similar level of challenge.
Empowerment
Giving employees the means by which they can exercise power over their working lives.
