9.6 Flashcards
Why is planning important
Failing to plan is planning to fail
What questions should you ask your self when planning a physical task
Do we know what has to be done?
Do we have the skills to do the job?
Do we have the resources to do the job? (Personnel, facilities, documentation, guidance, spares)
Who’s job is it to plan
The shift supervisor
Who is responsible for ensuring resources are available
Shift supervisors
What is it up to the engineer to do, in relation to planning and tasks
Decide if they are proficient enough and must own up to any misgivings
What happens to an engineer as they get older
Musculoskeletal system stiffens, muscles get weaker, injuries take longer to heal
Important to stay in shape and take breaks
Why is missing a break counter productive
Fatigue will diminish motor skills, perception, awareness and standards
Work may slow and mistakes may occur which will need rectification
Negative effects of repetitive tasks
Can be tedious and reduce arousal
Can become practised that you stop referring to the manual
Therefore if something changes about a task you may not be aware
Complacency
Eg in the aloha incident
What tools can be used to aid visual inspections?
Boroscope
Magnifying glass
Mirror
Can additional senses be used in visual inspections or is it just sight?
Yes other senses are used
Smell
Feel
Hear
“Visual inspection is often the principal method used to identify degradation”
True or false?
True
Steps an engineer should take during a visual inspection.
Understand the inspection
Locate the area to be inspected
Make sure the environment is adequate
Conduct a systematic search
Disadvantages of visual inspection
Can be difficult to maintain concentration and end up “glazing over” a defected part.
Low arousal
How do you counteract the low arousal during visual inspection?
Take short breaks
Meaning of a complex system
Thought of as having a wide variety of inputs and can also have 1 or many outputs.
System specific training must achieve the correct balance between.
