9.5 - vehicle safety Flashcards
what is the effect of a collision measured in terms of?
the vehicles acceleration/decleration
what is contact time
the time the objects are in contact with another, the time is the same for both objects
describe the forces and what happens to the velocity when 2 objects collide and remain tangled together
the objects exert forces on another until they move at the same velocity
define impact time
duration of impact force
the equation for impact force
- (given m & a)
- (given change in Ek & impact time)
- F = ma
- F = ΔEk / t
what are vesicle safety features designed to do
increase impact time = decrease impact force
What do vehicle bumpers do
give way in a low-speed collision
= increase impact time
what do crumple zones do
they are the front engine component that is designed to crumple on impact = increase impact time
what do seat belts do?
provides a restraining force, to slow the wearer down in a greater time frame = increased impact time
what does a collapsible steering wheel do
decreases impact force on the driver if they hit the steering wheel
what does an air bag do
- act as a cushion to increase the imact time.
- spreads impact force over a larger area, decreasing pressure
(P=F/A)
