9.2 Cards Flashcards
what are the phases of mitosis
prophase
prometaphase
metaphase
anaphase
telophase
cytokinesis
what is the goal of mitosis
to divide cells into identical daughter cells
how are chromatids held together
the centromere
what happens in prophase
chromatin condenses into chromosomes, two sister chromosomes joined at the centromere and the mitotic spindle forms
what happens in prometaphase
the nuclear envelope falls apart and the microtubules can bind to the chromosomes
what happens in metaphase
the chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell and the spindle fibers attach
what happens in anaphase
the chromosomes get pulled apart into sister chromatids and then the spindle fibers pull them to opposite sides of the cell
what happens in telophase
daughter nuclei start to form and the nuclear envelope starts to appear and then dna decondenses and the spindle starts to depolymerize
what happens in cytokinesis
the cytoplasm splits and forms two identical daughter cells
