2.1 Cards Flashcards
What is population?
the same species living in the same area at the same time
what are some ways to find population size
Quadrats
mark and recapture
random sampling
what are some factors that affect population
abiotic and biotic features and intrinsics
what are some abiotic features
sunlight and temperature
precipitation and water
soil/nutrients
what are some biotic features
other living ogranisms
what does population density mean
the number of individuals in an area
what does population distribution mean
the pattern in which organisms are spread
what are some examples of population distribution
clumped
random
uniform
what is clumped population
when the population is spread with groups/clumps
what is random population distibution
when the population is spread randomly around an area
what is uniform population
when a population is evenly/uniformly spread around an area
why might somehting have a uniform population
there are limited resources so they are evenly spread out
what might something have a clumped population
they are territorial aniamls and they gather where the resources are
why might something have a random population
this is very rare in nature but it could be from wind spread seeds or when there are abundent resources in an area
what distribution would be best for random sampling
uniform
what are some exmaples of organisms with a uniform distribution
penguins
what are some exmaples of organisms with a random distribution
dandelions
what are some exmaples of organisms with a clumped distribution
lions
how do you find the population for quadrats
mean number of individuals per quadrat x (area of habitat / area of quadrat)
how do you find the population with mark and recapture
total number of animals in 1st sample x (total number of animals in 2nd sample) / number of marked animals in 2nd sample)
