9.1 Flashcards
Blood is pumped by the -
heart
Blood travels in -
blood vessels
Artery or Arteries
carry blood sent from the heart.
Vein or Veins
carry blood to the heart.
Arterioles
small arteries
Venules
small veins
Valves
ensure a one-way flow of blood.
The circulatory system is made of -
blood vessels
heart ( a pump)
valves
A Fish’s heart has -
one atrium
one vertical
Single circulation
The blood goes through the heart once a complete circuit.
The circulation of a Fish’s
single circulation
- the atrium sends deoxygenated blood to the gills where it is oxygenated. (blood pressure is lost)
- oxygenated blood goes through the body capillaries of the fish before returning back to the heart.
What makes the circulatory system of a fish inefficient?
It cannot maintain blood pressure.
Double circulation of a human
- the right side of the heart collects deoxygenated blood from the body and pumps it to the lungs.
(builds up pressure before it pumps it to the lungs.)
- the left side of the heart collects oxygenated blood form the lungs and pumps it to the body.
(builds up pressure before it pumps it to the body.)
Advantages of a double circulatory system
Maintains the blood pressure
Double circulation is made up of two parts -
Pulmonary circulation
Systematic circulation
