What was the Political situation of the PRC in 1952?
A
- Economy was stabilising and a general line was adopted which was a 15yr period Mao projected it would take to develop industrially and economically.
- The policy of democratic censorship was developed which said party members could debate a policy whilst it was being made but as soon as a decision was made nobody could speak about it even if they disagreed.

What were the key features of the purge of Gao Gung?
A
- He was responsible for the first 5yr plan but criticised the PM Zhou Enlai’s pace of change.
- As a result, he was purged and accused of trying to build an independent kingdom, arrested and later committed suicide.

- He was a literacy critic and wrote that the CCP had stifled creativity of art.
- Was charged with being a GMD member and imprisoned.
- The campaign scared intellectuals about speaking their minds

What were main causes for the Hundred Flowers Campaign?
A
- Mao wanted to increase the pace of change especially the targets in the first 5yr plan was achieved
- He felt bureaucratism and officials becoming alienated was occurring and rectification was needed – people to target party not him
- The secret speech given by Khrushchev had caused uprisings in Poland and Hungary (The secret speech had influence on other leading members, Zhou Enlai and Deng Xiaoping got rid of Maoist thought causing Mao to withdraw himself from public view for 3 months)
- He passed the campaign in a speech when he said ‘let the hundred flowers blossom’

- The anti-rightist campaign after intellectuals criticised the party, purging them by sending them to Lagios for re-educating eradicating poisonous weeds – 550,000 killed
- This campaign strengthened his power by terrifying people
