9 - Networks & Swarms Flashcards
Centralized Networks
Main form of authority is concentrated with one individual entity
- Controlled by a single point (“the brain”)
Pros of a Centralized Network
- Cost effective
- Central point of failure
- Clear CoC
- Scalability
Cons of a Centralized Network
- Transparency
- Central point of failure
- Inflexible
- Latency
Decentralized Network
Similar to a centralized network, but uses several command nodes that are linked to other smaller subset nodes
Pros of a Decentralized Network
- More flexible
- Less chance of complete failure
- Easier to specialize
- Less latency
Cons are similar to a Centralized Network
Pros of a Distributed Network
- Resource sharing
- Fault tolerant
- Scalability
- Transparency
Disadvantages of a Distributed Network
Difficult to deploy
- Not enough qualified personnel
What is Link 16
Means of electronically linking to aerial units with surface or ground units
The Internet in relation to Networks
Avoids centralization by using multiple connection paths
Benefits of the uses of Swarms
- Cost
- Resiliency
- Simple
- Flexible
- Mobility
Simple Rules of Swarm like activity
- Goal Seeking
- Avoidance/separation
- Cohesion
- Alignment
What is Emergence?
Occurs when an entity is observed to have properties its parts do not have on their own. It’s affected by the group it is in
What is Mosaic Warfare?
“An effective warfighting whole made up of many diverse and fluid pieces”
Ability to integrate and mesh pieces of technology together
