5 - Sensors Flashcards
1
Q
What is a Sensor?
A
Device or subsytem whose purpose is to detect events or changes in its environment.
A sensor should:
- Be sensitive to the measured property
- Be insensitive to any other property likely to be encountered in its application
- Not influence the measured property
2
Q
Piezoelectric
A
“Squeeze for electricity”
Can also be shaped by supplying electricity
3
Q
What is Noise
A
Unwanted disturbance in a signal
Acoustic
Electromagnetic
4
Q
Acoustic Noise
A
Extra sources of sound that could potentially drown out the signal
5
Q
Electromagnetic Noise
A
Similar to Acoustic Noise, this is the disturbances that can influence electronic signals
Examples:
- Thermal noise (movement of electrons)
- Solar noise (radiation)
- Atmospheric noise (lightning)
6
Q
What is an Impulse?
A
A sudden change in noise; usually a spike in noise
7
Q
What is Gaussian Noise?
A
Sustained noises that follow a random pattern of positive and negative amplitudes.
Examples:
- Rain falling (acoustic)
- Radiation (electromagnetic)
8
Q
What is GPS?
A
Global Positioning Sytem
- Four satellites are required to calculate: lat, long, altitude, and time
