5 - Sensors Flashcards

1
Q

What is a Sensor?

A

Device or subsytem whose purpose is to detect events or changes in its environment.

A sensor should:

  • Be sensitive to the measured property
  • Be insensitive to any other property likely to be encountered in its application
  • Not influence the measured property

Q

Electromagnetic Noise

A

Similar to Acoustic Noise, this is the disturbances that can influence electronic signals

Examples:

  • Thermal noise (movement of electrons)
  • Solar noise (radiation)
  • Atmospheric noise (lightning)

Q

What is Gaussian Noise?

A

Sustained noises that follow a random pattern of positive and negative amplitudes.

Examples:

  • Rain falling (acoustic)
  • Radiation (electromagnetic)

What is GPS?

A

Global Positioning Sytem

  • Four satellites are required to calculate: lat, long, altitude, and time
