Q

Open Loop

A

Refers to a control system for an operation or process in which there is no self-correcting action.

Advantages:

  • Simple to design
  • Cheaper to build
  • Maintenance is low

Disadvantages:

  • Systems require calibration
  • More prone to error
  • Cannot adjust for disturbances

Q

Closed Loop

A

Senses the system’s output and controls the signal going to the actuator

Advantages:

  • Allows for an accurate, consistent response
  • System can adjust for noise and disturbances

Disadvantages:

  • More complex
  • More expensive
  • More prone to failure due to complex parts
