9 Emotions and The Brain Flashcards
Damasio’s theory
Emotions are bodily reactions, whereas feelings are conscious experiences which come afterwards
Rolls’ theory
He doesn’t think emotions necessarily come first since both emotions and feelings originate in the brain
What are the basic emotions
Anger Disgust Fear Surprise Happiness Sadness Contempt
Are the basic emotions universal
Ekman believed they were however Gendron et al found only happy and sad were consistently matched up so are the only universal ones
What is a criticism of the basic emotions
They don’t describe the full richness of human emotional experience
How many categories did Cowan and Keltner put forward?
27 categories
What is complete specialisation?
The idea that fear is from one part of the brain and anger another
What is complete dispersion
The idea that anger and fear both come from every part of the brain
Can we distinguish emotional stares in the brain?
Yes when using multivariate fMRI
What is an emerging view of the dispersion of emotions in the brain?
They are dynamic and so not just controlled by one part of the brain
Problems with human research
No neuroimaging method has
•high spatial resolution
•high temporal resolution
•whole brain coverage
What does the amygdala have a crucial role in?
Fear
