13th Amendment
Amendment that granted citizenship to all persons “born or naturalized & provided all citizens with “equal protection under the laws,”
14th Amendment
Amendment that granted African American MEN the right to vote
15th Amendment
Southern race laws that encouraged segregation and discrimination against African Americans.
Jim Crow Laws
Techniques to prevent African Americans from voting
- Poll Taxes
- Literacy tests
- Grandfather Clause-if your grandfather could vote before 1867, then you can vote
Supreme Court decision that upheld segregation and said that “separate but equal” facilities were legal.
Plessy v. Ferguson (1896)
- Early civil rights leader and co-founder of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) (PHd. from Harvard)
- Pushed for equality now
W.E.B. Du Bois
This early Civil Rights activist believed African Americans should achieve economic independence before social equality.
Booker T. Washington
Supreme Court case that broke down “Separate but Equal Laws” (segregation was illegal)
1954 - Brown v Board of Education
- It started with Rosa Parks refusing to give up her seat
- Last 11 months-Supreme Court ordered Montgomery to integrate busses
1955 - Montgomery Bus Boycott
- Tries to integrate Central HS in Little Rock Ark.
- The governor sent troops in to PREVENT students from joining
- Pres. Eisenhower sent troops to PROTECT students
1957 - Little Rock 9
1st student to integrate a school in New Orleans
1960 - Ruby Bridges
- Famous “I have a dream” Speech by Martin Luther King Jr.
- Will help push through laws to protect voting and integration
1963 - March on Washington
Made discrimination based on race, religion, or national origin in public places illegal and required employers to hire on an equal opportunity basis.
Civil Rights Act of 1964
- signed by LBJ to uphold the 15th Amendment.
- No Jim Crow laws for voting (literacy tests, grandfather clause, ect.)
- Reduced voter discrimination at polling sites
Voting Rights Act of 1965
- Civil Rights leader from the 1950s – 1960s
- Organize the Montgomery bus boycott to protest segregation.
Martin Luther King Jr.
- Black Muslim leader who argued for separation, not integration,
- Influenced the Black Power movement
Malcolm X
She refused to give up her seat to a white passenger. After she was jailed, the Montgomery bus boycott was organized.
Rosa Parks
She was the first African American woman in Congress (1968)
Shirley Chisholm
- 1st African American Supreme Court Justice (1967)
- Leading lawyer in Brown v. Board of Education Case
Thurgood Marshall
- Leader of the Black Panther Party
- Provided community-based initiatives - which included free meals for children and health clinics.
- Militant action to protect neighborhoods against police brutality
Huey P. Newton
- Was an American farm worker, labor leader and civil rights activist.
- He pushed for greater rights for migrant farm workers.
- Organized boycotts for migrant workers
Cesar Chavez
- California teacher who fought for farm worker’s rights
- Secured disability insurance for farm workers
- Directed a national grape boycott to protest the dangers of pesticides for farm workers
Dolores Huerta
This group wanted to obtain fair wages & improve labor conditions for migrant workers
