One of the most important African American abolitionists. Born in slavery in Maryland and later escaped for Massachusetts. Described his life in under slavery and spoke our for abolition and was against discrimination towards African Americans.
Frederick Douglass
A person who was responsible for making sure all of the enslaved people did the work expected of them. Punished those who disobeyed an order; had to be careful of punishment because they don’t want to hurt slaves enough for them to not work.
overseer
A large government owned or privately owned farm where a single commercial crop is grown. Mostly in tropical or subtropical climates.
plantation
Laws drafted by states and colonies in the South. Defines the rights of enslaved African Americans.
slave codes
A person who has escaped from something or is running away. Many enslaved people became this when they tried to run away from plantations.
