8th grade Science Unit one Vocabulary Flashcards
The change in velocity
Acceleration
Total distance of time divided by total time.
Average Speed
The sides on a graph.
The x represents an independent variable
the y represents a dependent variable
Axis
When an object is changing in direction but not speed.
Centripetal acceleration
Variables that could prove the experiment invalid. Variables that were not accounted for and affect the relationship and results of an experiment and variables.
confounding variable
Remaining the same or steady. The same throughout and does not change.
Constant
the speed at any point is the same at every other point. The speed remains the same throughout the entire time. (This would be indicated by a straight line on a motion graph) the same distance is traveled per unit time.
Constant Speed
group that receives no treatment in an experiment.
Used to compare.
Control Group
The variable that is measured and is expected to change.
Dependent Variable
the path that something takes.
The way it goes or faces.
Ex:
North South East Or West
Direction
A graph that shows the relationship between Distance and time. The x-axis is time the y-axis is distance.
Amount traveled per time. Line graphs where distance is plotted against time can show the motion of an object
Distance time graph
A process which can either support or reject your hypothesis. Done in order to answer a question.
Experiment
An educated guess for a scientific question. Can either be supported or rejected by an experiment.
Hypothesis
The Variable that is controlled or changed by the scientist.
Independent Variable
Speed at a specific moment in time.
Instantaneous Speed
The AMOUNT or maximum extent of something.
Magnitude
process of changing position relative to a reference point. Process of changing distance from another object or reference point.
Motion
An object slowing down and an acceleration that is in the opposite direction of the velocity
Negative Acceleration
A specific place where something is located. Location.
Position
An indicator that orients you. Compare distance or location to this point. place or object used for comparison to determine if something is in motion.
Reference point
A measure that includes a magnitude and a unit
Scalar Measure
Correlation of two sets of data or variables. Points on a graph.
Scatterplot graph
a question that may lead to a hypothesis and help us in. answering (or figuring out) the reason for some observation
Scientific Question
The measure of the distance and object travels per unit time. The rate at which something travels a certain distance in a certain amount of time.
