8.Management of TRS' Flashcards
Adaptation
Land use planning, reduce vulnerability of people and property at coast, only low value land uses
Creation of cyclone shelters, particularly in LIC’s
Some parts of eastern Florida, coastal properties are raised above ground on stilts and have non residential functions on ground floor
Preparation
Education and public awareness campaigns, using media to warn people of dangers
In Florida, evacuation routes and cyclone shelters clearly signposted, families encouraged to plan
TRS drills practised
Satellites and technology such as radar can identify and track TRS
Preparation 2
Computer models use historical data to predict likely track
‘Hurricane watch’ issued at risk within 36 hours, then upgraded to ‘Hurricane warning’ when landfall is expected in 24 hours
EG National Hurricane Centre in Miami
Mitigation
Disaster aid: immediate humanitarian relief, search and rescue, food, water, medicine
Structural responses: Soft engineering eg planting trees, building up beaches to absorb energy
Insurance: Used in HIC’s. In USA hurricane prone areas. Creates social issues as rich enjoy premiums EG poorest in Hurricane Katrina didn’t have insurance so stayed to secure homes
Mitigation
Structural responses: Some structures adjusted to make more resistant to wind, AKA Retrofitting
More viable option in LIC than building new buildings
Prevention
Cloud seeding: dropping crystals into clouds to cause rain.
‘Seeds’ dissipate storms as it forces them to release more water over the sea via precipitation-> less powerful when approaching land
