2.Magnitude, Regularity and Predictability Flashcards
Saffir Simpson
Developed in 1971 and allows storms of different magnitudes to be compared, absolute scale based on sustained wind speeds, widely used
HOWEVER
Limited value when assessing impact, doesn’t take into account rainfall, or area affected by the storm
Difficult to prepare, extent of damage is unknown
Regularity
REGULAR:
Over a long period of time there is a degree of regularity, generally restricted to the tropics and not too close to the equator. Occur in summer to Autumn
IRREGULAR:
No set spatial or temporal pattern. Although they follow similar tracks each storm develops its own characteristics and responds uniquely to atmospheric and oceanographic conditions
Predictability
US NOAA publishes a prediction of hurricane activity for upcoming season. Use satellites and supercomputers to analyse sea surface temps, atmospheric conditions and climatic cycles
NOAA cannot predict landfall or give precise locations can only be done in final few days but can still change course
