Benefits of Navy BMD
Multi-mission capable
Flexible geography
Limited logistical requirements
Search, track, and engage capability
Multi-mission capable
Able to conduct BMD along with all the other mission areas. US Navy Ships are not single mission platforms.
Flexible geography
Ships are able to move relatively easily from one body of water to another to conduct BMD where necessary.
Limited logisitcal requirements
Ships do not require much to be kept on station. Will just need occasional refueling and resupply of stores, parts, and other materials.
Search, track, and engage capability
Being an AEGIS platform, BMD Ships are able to search for ballistic missiles, track them, and engage the missiles.
Navy BMD Functions
BMD Surveillance, Tracking, and Cueing
BMD Engagement
Data Collection
BMD Mission Planner Inputs
Defended Area (DA)
Launch Area Denied (LAD)
Missile Type
Ship’s Operating Area (SOA)
Defended Area (DA)
Defined portion of the defended territory protected against long-range missile attacks
Launch Area Denied (LAD)
Refers to the collection of threat countries/areas from which the DA will be protected
Missile Type
Defines the missile kinematics for which the systems will plan.
Ship’s Operating Area (SOA)
Area in which the ship will be restricted to operating to support the assigned BMD mission
