8.1 - Components of an Ecosystem Flashcards
What Is the Meaning of Interdependence?
Means that all organisms in a food web are interconnected, affecting other’s survival in helpful and harmful ways.
What exactly is the environment?
All the factors in an organism’s surroundings that affect its survival.
What is ecology?
Ecology is the study of how organisms interact with each other and with their non-living surroundings.
What is the ecosystem?
A place where the organisms and their physical surroundings form an environment that is different from other environments nearby.
What are two main sets of environmental factors influencing organisms organisms in an ecosystem?
1) Abiotic Factors
2) Biotic Factor
What is an abiotic factor?
Non-living factors such as air quality and humidity, the amount of sunlight , rainfall, wind, tides, waves, lightning and fires. Abiotic factors are also known as physical factors.
What is a biotic factor?
These are living factors such as predators, parasites, fungi, infectious organisms, competition for food and shelter and collaborators (breeding partners)
Examples of abiotic factors?
Fire, Rainfall, and Sunlight
Examples of biotic factors?
Predators, Parasites, Collaborators
